Definition: Landslides, also known as landslips or mudslides, are geological events where masses of rock, soil, or debris move down a slope under the force of gravity. They can occur in various forms, such as rockfalls, debris flows, and rotational slides. Landslides are natural hazards that can be triggered by a combination of factors, including heavy rainfall, earthquakes, volcanic activity, human activities, and changes in slope stability.

Causes of Landslides:

  1. Heavy Rainfall: Saturated soil due to prolonged or intense rainfall can increase the weight of the slope, leading to instability and potential landslides.
  2. Earthquakes: Ground shaking during earthquakes can loosen soil and rock, causing landslides on steep slopes.
  3. Volcanic Activity: Volcanic eruptions can create unstable conditions on slopes, leading to landslides.
