Definition:

Asperger syndrome was a previously recognized neurodevelopmental disorder that is now considered part of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It was first described by Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger in the 1940s. Asperger syndrome was characterized by difficulties in social interaction, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors. The term “Asperger’s” is no longer used in official diagnostic criteria, and individuals who previously would have received an Asperger’s diagnosis are now classified under the broader category of ASD.

Symptoms and Clinical Features:

Individuals with Asperger syndrome (now classified under ASD) typically exhibit a range of symptoms, including:

  1. Social Difficulties: Challenges with social interaction and communication are prominent features. Individuals may have difficulty understanding social cues, maintaining eye contact, or engaging in reciprocal conversations.
  2. Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors: Individuals may engage in repetitive movements or have specific routines or rituals. They may also display intense focus or interest in specific topics, often to the exclusion of others.
  3. Speech and Language Differences: Some individuals with Asperger syndrome may have advanced language skills, but they may use language in a formal or overly pedantic manner. They may also struggle with understanding non-literal language (e.g., sarcasm or humor).
